Description

Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), a class-III intermediate filament, is a cell-specific marker that distinguishes astrocytes from other glial cells during the development of the central nervous system [PMID: 12058025, PMID: 1847665]. Defects in GFAP are a cause of Alexander disease (ALEXD), which is a rare disorder of the central nervous system [PMID: 12975300].
