Oestrogen-related receptors (ERR-alpha, ERR-beta, and ERR-gamma) are orphan nuclear receptors whose physiological ligands have not yet been identified. ERRs are closely related to oestrogen receptors (ERs), and bind and regulate transcription via oestrogen response elements (EREs) and extended ERE half-sites termed ERR response elements (ERREs) [PMID: 16515477]. However, they do not respond to oestrogens [PMID: 12185669]. ERR-alpha has been shown to play a role in energy homeostasis [PMID: 21731503] and defects in ERR-beta are the cause of deafness autosomal recessive type 35 (DFNB35), which is a form of sensorineural hearing loss. [PMID: 18179891].
