Family relationships

Members of the makorin (mkrn) gene family encode zinc finger proteins with a typical C3HC4 motif called the RING finger domain. The RING finger domain is responsible for ubiquitin ligase activity [PMID: 19489725], and accordingly some makorin proteins have been proven to work as E3 ubiquitin ligases [PMID: 15805468]. At least four makorin genes exist in vertebrates [PMID: 21172006].

Makorin 2 is likely a ribonucleoprotein of unknown function, but its conservation suggests an important cellular role [PMID: 11597136].
