This family of SARS coronavirus proteins includes Orf3/3a, which form homotetrameric potassium sensitive ion channels (viroporin) and may modulate virus release. They have also been shown to up-regulate expression of fibrinogen subunits FGA, FGB and FGG in host lung epithelial cells [PMID: 16014971, PMID: 16474139, PMID: 16894145].

3a protein is a pro-apoptosis-inducing protein. It localises to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-Golgi compartment. The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV) causes apoptosis of infected cells, and this is one of the culprits [PMID: 15135062, PMID: 15781262, PMID: 16894145].
