Family relationships

Escherichia coli phage P4 is a defective phage lacking the genetic information necessary for capsid, tail, and lysis functions. Because of this it is reliant on the presence of a so-called "helper phage", such as P2 or a related phage, to supply the genes necessary for lytic propagation. P4 infection of a P2 lysogenic host cell derepresses the P2 prophage which then starts unidirectional DNA replication. This process leads to the formation of P4 phages and cell lysis.

This entry represents the epsilon derepression protein. In P4 this is the only protein required for helper phage derepression [PMID: 9151842].
