DNA modification protein Mom (IPR020291)

Short name: DNA_mod_Mom

Family relationships

The mom gene from Bacteriophae Mu is transcribed only when DNA is methylated by Dam, a deoxyadenosine methylase; this methylation dependence is determined by a region upstream of the mom gene containing three Dam-methylation sites [PMID: 6229339]. The mom gene product is an acetyltransferase, which converts adenine to acetamido adenine in a sequence-specific manner. Its function is to protect the viral genome against a wide variety of restriction endonucleases [PMID: 10665835].
