Family relationships

In the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis mitochondria play a crucial role by releasing cytochrome c from the intermembrane space into the cytoplasm after mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization. Outer membrane permeabilization can be mediated by the Bax/Bak-related channel or by the permeability transition pore (PTP), which is thought to consist of cyclophilin D (CypD), a voltage-dependent anion channel, and an adenine nucleotide transporter [PMID: 9874241]. Apoptogenic protein (Apop) induces apoptosis though the CypD-dependent pathway [PMID: 16782708].
