Description

The mammalian ligands that bind the EGF receptor (EGFR) include EGF, transforming growth factor-alpha (TGFalpha), heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (HB-EGF), amphiregulin (AR), betacellulin (BTC), epiregulin (EPR), and epigen. Each contains one or more copies of the EGF repeat. The EGF domain includes six cysteine residues, which have been shown (in EGF) to be involved in disulphide bonds. The main structure is a two-stranded beta-sheet followed by a loop to a C-terminal short two-stranded sheet. Subdomains between the conserved cysteines vary in length.

Interestingly, this entry also includes some epidermal growth factor-like proteins secreted from virus, including pro-vaccinia growth factor from Vaccinia virus [PMID: 2229050].
