Cellulose-binding family II/chitobiase, carbohydrate-binding domain (IPR012291)

Short name: CBD_carb-bd_dom

Domain relationships

This carbohydrate-binding domain is present in two EC:3.2.1 families: the chitobiase family of glycoside hydrolases (N-terminal), and in bacterial type-II cellulases and xylanases. Chitobiases degrade chitin, which forms the exoskeleton in insects and crustaceans, and which is one of the most abundant polysaccharides on earth [PMID: 8673609]. Bacterial type-II cellulases and xylanases degrade cellulose and xylans, respectively; this domain can be located either N- or C-terminal to the catalytic domain in these bacterial enzymes [PMID: 10973978].
