Butyrate kinase (IPR011245)

Short name: Butyrate_kin

Family relationships

Description

Butyrate kinase is an enzyme that facilitates the formation of butyryl-CoA by phosphorylating butyrate in the presence of ATP to form butyryl phosphate [PMID: 8396545]. The final steps in butyrate synthesis by anaerobic bacteria can occur via butyrate kinase and phosphotransbutyrylase or via butyryl-CoA:acetate CoA-transferase, the latter providing the dominant route for butyrate formation in human colonic bacteria [PMID: 15028695].
