Homologous Superfamily

Malate synthase-like superfamily (IPR011076)

Short name: Malate_synth-like_sf

Overlapping entries

This superfamily represents the core TIM beta/alpha barrel found in malate synthase and in related proteins such as the beta subunit of citrate lyase.

Malate synthase (EC: catalyses the aldol condensation of glyoxylate with acetyl-CoA to form malate as part of the second step of the glyoxylate bypass and an alternative to the tricarboxylic acid cycle in bacteria, fungi and plants. Malate synthase has a TIM beta/alpha-barrel fold [PMID: 10715138].

This entry is also represented by citrate lyase beta subunit (EC:, a component of citrate lyase (EC:, which catalyses the interconversion of citrate with acetate and oxaloacetate.
