Beta-secretase BACE1 (IPR009120)

Short name: BACE1

Overlapping homologous superfamilies

Family relationships

The beta-site APP cleaving enzyme-1 (BACE1), also known as memapsin-1, mediates one of the two proteolytic cleavages of beta-amyloid precursor protein (APP) to yield the amyloid beta-peptide (Abeta), a key pathogenic agent in Alzheimer's disease (AD) [PMID: 20354142]. Axonal and Schwann cell BACE1 is also required for remyelination of injured nerves [PMID: 25740511]. BACE1 inhibitor drugs have been evaluated for AD treatment [PMID: 25621019]. BACE1 is (EC: and MEROPS identifier A01.004.
