This family of enzymes, homoserine O-succinyltransferase, catalyses the first step in the biosynthesis of methionine: Succinyl-CoA + L-homoserine = CoA + O-succinyl-L-homoserine

This enzyme is essential for the survival of bacteria, plants and fungi. Since they are not found in humans, they make a promising new target for antimicrobial drug development. Homoserine O-succinyltransferase (HST) is a representative from this class and has recently had the key amino acids involved in substrate specificity and catalysis elucidated [PMID: 17442255].
