Multidrug resistance proteins are molecular pumps that participate in a low energy shock adaptive response in some bacteria. They mediate cellular resistance to toxicants such as cycloheximide (CYH), 4-nitroquinoline N-oxide (4-NQO), cadmium, and hydrogen peroxide in yeast [PMID: 9235926].
