Description

These proteins exhibit homology to the Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast) ORF YDR140w (MTQ2). Mtq2 methylates eRF1 on 'Gln-182' using S-adenosyl L-methionine as methyl donor. eRF1 needs to be complexed to eRF3 in its GTP-bound form to be efficiently methylated [PMID: 15509572, PMID: 16321977, PMID: 17008308]. Human homologue of Mtq2 is called hemK methyltransferase family member 2 (HEMK2). HEMK2 is a heterodimeric methyltransferase that catalyses N5-methylation of ETF1 on 'Gln-185', using S-adenosyl L-methionine as methyl donor. ETF1 needs to be complexed to ERF3 in its GTP-bound form to be efficiently methylated. It may play a role in the modulation of arsenic-induced toxicity. It may be involved in the conversion of monomethylarsonous acid (3+) into the less toxic dimethylarsonic acid [PMID: 18539146, PMID: 21193388].
