Family

Strictosidine synthase (IPR004141)

Short name: Strictosidine_synthase

Family relationships

None.

Description

Strictosidine synthase (EC:4.3.3.2) is a key enzyme in alkaloid biosynthesis. It catalyses the Pictet-Spengler stereospecific condensation of tryptamine with secologanin to form strictosidine [PMID: 18081287]. The structure of the native enzyme from the Indian medicinal plant Rauvolfia serpentina (Serpentwood) (Devilpepper) represents the first example of a six-bladed four-stranded beta-propeller fold from the plant kingdom [PMID: 18280746].
