Family relationships

This is a group of peptidases belonging to MEROPS peptidase family U32 (clan U-). The type example is collagenase (gene prtC) from Porphyromonas gingivalis (Bacteroides gingivalis) [PMID: 1317840], which is an enzyme that degrades type I collagen and that seems to require a metal cofactor. The product of PrtC is evolutionary related to a number of uncharacterised proteins with a well conserved region containing two cysteines.

The peptidases families associated with clan U- have an unknown catalytic mechanism as the protein fold of the active site domain and the active site residues have not been reported.
