Tektin (IPR000435)

Short name: Tektin

Family relationships

This entry represents the tektins family. Its members include tektin 1-5, tektin-B1.

Tektins are insoluble, filament-forming proteins essential for the construction of cilia and flagella [PMID: 18671835]. Tektins form unique protofilaments, organised as longitudinal polymers of tektin heterodimers with axial periodicity matching tubulin. They are related to intermediate filament (IF) proteins and nuclear lamins [PMID: 18671835]. They can be found in ciliary and flagellar axonemes, basal bodies and centrioles [PMID: 3282233]. They may play a role in flagellum stability and sperm motility [PMID: 24521320].
