Abstract
|
The Sphingomonas sp. A1 member of this group has been characterised as oligoalginate lyase [1].
Sphingomonas sp. can transport alginate into cells and then depolymerise it to di- and tri-saccharides by three kinds of cytoplasmic alginate lyases (A1-I, A1-II, and A1-III). The resultant alginate oligosaccharides are degraded to monosaccharides by cytoplasmic oligoalginate lyase [2]. The reaction catalysed by the Sphingomonas sp. oligoalginate lyase is exolytic. This enzyme is encoded by a gene located downstream of the genes coding for the precursor of alginate lyases (aly) and the ABC transporter (algS, algM1, and algM2) which are other genes for proteins required for the transport and complete depolymerisation of alginate [1]. Detailed sequence analysis shows sequence motifs conserved throughout this group of proteins. Therefore, other members of this group are predicted to be oligosaccharide lyases, but their exact substrates are unknown.
