Function:

Soluble 340-kDa glycoprotein synthesized by hepatocytes in the liver which participates in the final step of blood coagulation. Composed of two identical molecular halves, each molecular half consisting of three non-identical Aa-, Bb- and gamma-chain subunits held together by multiple disulfide bonds. Fibrinogen is shown to have a trinodular structure, namely: one central nodule ? the E domain, composed of the amino termini of all chains ? and two identical outer nodules ? the D-domains, composed of the carboxyl termini of the beta and gamma chains ? linked by two coiled-coil regions. Converted to fibrin in a reaction catalyzed by thrombin, which releases fibrinopeptides A and B from amino-termini of the alpha and beta chains to produce fibrin monomers
