Function:

Acetylates nucleosomes primarily on histones H3 and H2B in vitro but does not seem to participate directly in transcription in vivo. Ada2 is thought to potentiate Gcn5 catalytic activity and Ada3 to facilitate nucleosomal acetylation and an expanded lysine specificity. The relationship between ADA complex and the SAGA complex (EBI-1251060) is not yet clear. Both complexes contain Gcn5 as the catalytic HAT subunit as well as Ada2 and Ada3. The ADA complex lacking the Spt gene products may be a subcomplex of the larger SAGA complex, alternatively, although both contain Gcn5 and Ada proteins, each complex may carry out distinct nucleosomal HAT activities with unique functions in the cell.
