Dear Associates,
EBI is hosting a BioStandards Workshop 2-3 December
1999: "EST data analysis". Scientific coordinator:
Juha Muilu (EMBL-EBI). Please find below a description
of the workshop and a preliminary workshop programme
with the talks. The workshop will start at 9:25 on Thursday
2 December and it is expected to end at 16:00 on Friday
3 of December.
Kindest regards and we are looking forward to your
registrations.
Bodil Holle.
Description of the workshop:
Expressed sequence tag sequences (ESTs) are short fragments
of DNA sequences generated from either end of randomly
selected cDNA clones. The main purpose of EST sequencing
is to rapidly scan for all the protein coding genes
expressed and thereby to provide a "tag" for
each gene in the genome. Fast sequencing methods have
enabled a rapid increase in the number of EST sequences
produced and ESTs now account for the majority of DNA
entries in nucleotide sequence databases. The ESTs have
proven to be invaluable in various genomic activities
such as gene finding, as well as discovery of novel
genes, gene expression studies, and identification of
SNPs.
This workshop will review the context of EST sequences
in Functional Genomics, as well as review the state
of art in EST-related biocomputing and bioinformatics
activities. The intended audience for the workshop is
biologists with computational experience, as well as
bioinformaticians.
