E-Science @ EBI
e-Science aims to provide support for large-scale science by
enabling distributed global collaborations through the formation of
virtual co-laboratories that allow scientists to work together
irrespective of location and permit universal access to scientific
resources.
The aim of e-Science is to make the computing support invisible
and the complexity disappear so that
the scientist can think about the science & not the computing
infrastructure.
Our current approach is outlined in this document.
e-Science is about exploiting digital technology to support all
aspects of scientific activity by the development of a communication and
computational infrastructure to underpin the work of scientists. This will
necessitate exploiting technologies including middleware, compute & data
grids & the sematic web.
Given the exponential growth in the integration, storage &
compute requirements of molecular biology, the EMBL-EBI views making its
public resources available to an e-Science & Grid platform as being a
forward-looking endeavour. Thus the EMBL-EBI is participating in a number
of projects contributing towards the development of an e-Science & Grid
infrastructure for biology.
