EU funding for a bioinformatics infastructure in the post genomic era
At the beginning of 2002, the Commission of the European Union provided the largest ever single injection of funds into bioinformatics infrastructure in Europe, to the EBI. A group of four related proposals were combined into a contract under the Quality of Life programme, which provides almost €20 million over three years to the EBI and a group of 25 collaborators in 11 other countries.
The project, known as TEMBLOR - concentrates on research and development to build the European Bioinformatics resources for the genomic era and beyond. These resources will be embedded in an integrated layer, known as Integr8, allowing biomedical researchers to fully exploit genomic and proteomic data. Integr8 will draw on databases that are maintained at major bioinformatics centres in Europe, and also on important new resources.
Through TEMBLOR, the EC is funding the development of these new resources. Major projects within TEMBLOR are: IntAct, to create a database for protein-protein interaction data, PDBe to enhance the Protein Databank in Europe Database, and DESPRAD to establish a microarray data repository. TEMBLOR does not fund the maintenance of existing genomic and proteomic databases such as EMBL-Bank, Swiss-Prot and Ensembl.
The eventual aim of TEMBLOR is to allow users to carry out complex queries across databases in a much simpler way than has previously been possible, by accessing all of these databases through Integr8. To achieve this, the TEMBLOR partners are in the process of:
- designing, developing and implementing the integrative layer,
- integrating existing databases into the integrative layer,
-
creating new components (and enhancing existing ones) that are essential for the envisaged Integr8 data backbone (the most important components are covered by the IntAct, PDBe, and DESPRAD projects),
- developing new algorithms to exploit the integrative layer,
- developing new text-, structure- and sequence-based Integr8 services, and
- training European researchers in the use of Integr8 data and services, thereby allowing them to make the most of the information in the Integr8ed databases.
