Semantic Mining in Biomedicine Symposium

First International Symposium on Semantic Mining in Biomedicine (SMBM) - 10th -13th April, 2005
European Bioinformatics Institute, Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, UK

Registration Deadline Extended: Tues 22nd March 2005

Organised by the EU Network of Excellence SemanticMining and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI)

SMBM 2005 is a 3 day forum investigating in literature mining needs in Life Sciences, taking place on the 11th-13th of April 2005 (Tutorials on 10th).

Motivation:
Medicine and molecular biology are nowadays data driven sciences, where electronic access to terminology, information resources and tools is crucial for success and leads to cross-fertilization in both domains. Semantic mining propels the integration of terminological resources into retrieval and extraction methods to boost awareness to new research results in the biomedical domain.

Quick Guide to the SMBM Symposium:

Introduction

SMBM 2005 is a 3 day forum investigating in
literature mining needs in Life Sciences
11th-13th of April 2005
(Tutorials on 10th)

Setup:

The symposium targets members from bioinformatics, medical informatics, computational linguistics and computer science to propose new approaches for efficient information handling based on ontologies in the biomedical domain. New approaches for efficient information management in the biomedical domain.  We expect innovative solutions from text mining and information extraction making use of semantics, as well as solutions from ontology-based semantic representation.

Peer-reviewed publications will be complemented with keynote speaker presentations, invited talks, posters and panel discussions focusing on current progress and obstacles.

Selected publications will be published in a special issue of Bioinformatics.  All accepted publications will be published on CEUR and in the conference proceedings.  Submissions have to comply to the standards of Bioinformatics. (http://bioinformatics.oupjournals.org/)

Appreciation:

This event is the first of this kind and shortens the loop between (power-) users and new solution providers. It is organised in co-operation between the EBI and the Semantic Mining Network, based on the partnership of 25 participants from 11 European countries, supported by the European Commission's 6th Framework .

Call For Panel Discussion

Call for Panel Discussion

Text mining (TM) in bioinformatics and medical informatics relies on resources, i.e. terminologies, annotated text and domain knowledge from electronic databases.  Furthermore, TM has the ambition to make facts from text available consistent to the domain knowledge.

We are soliciting a panel discussion, which sheds light into the gaps and obstacles encountered from the integrative use of the different resources.  Proposals should comprise
  • a 3 page abstract covering the main controversies, which will be introduced to the discussion and the panel members.
  • The names and affiliations of the panelists and the moderator
  • From each panelist, a written approval to participate .

The deadline for SMBM 2005 panel discussion submission is Wednesday, 15 December 2004. Notification of acceptance will be given by Monday, 10 January 2005. Proposals have to be submitted electronically in PDF format to our submission mail address (SMBM2005@ebi.ac.uk).

Call for Tutorials

Call for Tutorials

We are soliciting the proposal of tutorials, which cover any of the following domains: text mining, i.e. computational linguistics and/or machine learning; primer in molecular biology; ontologies, i.e. design principles, GO, reasoning.  Tutorials span half a day on Sunday, April 10.  Proposals have to list the goal, content and structure of the tutorial.

The deadline for SMBM 2005 tutorial submission is Wednesday, 15 December 2004.  Notification of acceptance will be given by Monday, 10 January 2005.  Proposals have to be submitted electronically in PDF format to our submission mail address (SMBM2005@ebi.ac.uk).

Author Information

Author Information

Do follow carefully the submission guidelines. Papers not conforming to these guidelines will be excluded from reviews and hence from the conference.

Papers have to be submitted electronically in PDF format to our submission mail address (smbm@coling.uni-freiburg.de).

All accepted papers will be published in the proceedings and online at CEUR. Selected publications will also be published in Bioinformatics.

Presenters of accepted papers will be given a 20-minute slot (plus 5 minutes for questions) in the conference schedule.

Papers submitted for review should represent original, previously unpublished work. At the time the paper is submitted to SMBM 2005, and for the entire review period, the paper should not be under review by any other conference or scientific journal. If you are not a native English speaker, ask one for feedback and support on your style before submission. In general this speeds up the review and the publishing process.

For accepted papers, figures with multiple colours can be printed at the author's expense. Upon acceptance, authors must comply with the formatting instructions for final papers.

The text should not exceed 4000 words excluding bibliography and must include an abstract of not more than 250 words. Use A4 paper size with 2.5 cm margins left, right, top, and bottom. Place the title in 14 point Times Roman typeface, single-column, bolded, centred, initial capitals. Include the names, institutions and locations of the author(s) below the title using 12 point Times Roman typeface, single-column, bolded, centred, initial capitals. Include the main text of the submission single-spaced in 12 point Times Roman typeface, justified, one-column format.

The deadline for SMBM 2005 paper submissions is Saturday, 15 January 2005 (until 11.59 p.m. in the time zone of your choice). All submissions will be reviewed by at least 2 members of the Program Committee. Notification of acceptance will be given by Monday, 1 March 2005. Final, corrected versions of accepted papers are due no later than Monday, 30 March 2005.

Queries regarding call for papers should be directed to: SMBM2005@ebi.ac.uk, smbm@coling.uni-freiburg.de
