IPI - International Protein Index - Versioning Information
IPI entry identifiers and version numbers
An IPI ID belongs to a master entry from a constituent database, that provides the IPI entry
with its sequence and description. As long as that entry remains a master sequence of an IPI
entry, that IPI entry will retain the same IPI ID. If a new sequence becomes a master of an IPI
entry, that entry will be assigned a new IPI ID.
An exception to this rule will be made where a reference to a
former master entry is deleted from IPI, if one of that master's former associated entries
becomes a master in its stead. In that case, the new master will inherit its IPI ID from
its former master.
The sequence version increases whenever the sequence associated
with a particular IPI ID changes (but not necessarily when any other feature associated with
the IPI ID (such as the protein description or the composition of the cluster of entries
associated with it)).
IPI IDs will be stable, and versioning will be maintained,
from version 2.0 onwards. Identifiers and version numbers in IPI v2.0 are not backwards
compatible with IPI v1.1.
