Bacteria Genomes - XANTHOMONAS CAMPESTRIS
Xanthomonas campestris is
a plant pathogen that causes
black rot in certain plants and weeds
The genus Xanthomonas is
a diverse and economically important group of bacterial phytopathogens,
belonging to the gamma-subdivision of the Proteobacteria.
Xanthomonas
campestris pv. campestris (Xcc), a Gram-negative aerobic
rod, is the causal agent of black rot, which affects crucifers such
as Brassica and Arabidopsis. Symptoms include marginal leaf chlorosis
and darkening of vascular tissue, accompanied by extensive wilting
and necrosis. Full leaf yellowing, wilting, and necrosis occur as
the disease advances.
The Xcc
bacterium also infects weeds, including Arabidopsis thaliana , which has been sequenced and is the model species used in plant
research. Researchers can now test hypotheses about genes associated
with plant infections using the publicly available genome sequences
of the plant pathogen ( Xcc ) and one of its hosts (Arabidopsis).
Xanthomonas
campestris pv. campestris is grown commercially to produce
the exopolysaccharide xanthan gum, which is used as a viscosifying
and stabilising agent in many industries.
Researchers
have sequenced two major plant pathogens of the genus Xanthomonas,
each species preys on different crops and infects plants in different
ways, but the two genomes have 80 percent of their genes in common.
Comparative analysis between the two Xanthomonas strains allows
possible identification of a set of strain-specific genes, some
of which are probably responsible for the distinct pathogenicity
and host specificity profiles of these organisms.
