Archaea Genomes - THERMOPLASMA VOLCANIUM

Thermoplasma volcanium is able to live in the presence of oxygen as well as in environments lacking oxygen

Thermoplasma volcanium is an Aero/anaero-facultative, heterotrophic organism, that grows optimally at pH<2 and elevated temperatures (optimum growth temperature 60C). At the time of sequencing the complete genome, Thermoplasma volcanium had the lowest optimum growth temperature (OGT) among the archaea whose complete genomic sequences have been determined.

Thermoplasma volcanium was isolated from solfatara fields and it is unique among Archaea in being able to live in the presence of oxygen as well as in environments lacking oxygen.

Morphologically, Thermoplasma resemble Mycoplasma in that they lack a cell wall, they have high motility and multiple flagella and a unique cell membrane chemistry.
