Archaea Genomes - AEROPYRUM PERNIX

Aeropyrum pernix was the first aerobic member of the Archaea to be sequenced

Aerobic hyper-thermophilic crenarchaeon Aeropyrum pernix K1 optimally grows at 95 degrees C in pH 7.0, and a salanity of 3.5%. The cells of A. pernix are spherical shaped and 0.8 to 1.2 microns in diameter. It was isolated from a coastal solfataric thermal vent at Kodaka ra-Jima Island, Japan.

A.pernix is a first strictly aerobic hyperthermophilic archaeon to have its genome sequence determined.

Genome analyses of Aeropyrum pernix K1 and other hyperthermophiles have made an important contribution to the knowledge of the structures of useful substances such as proteins and enzymes which are suitable for use in the extreme environment.
